Nina Paley is an indie animator who wants to legally distribute her movie using music that is in the public domain. The problem is that “synch royalties” will cost her over $500,000(!) to obtain, and multiple companies claim 100% ownership of the same royalties(!!!). Wouldn’t it be great if someone wrote free software that synced music and video?

The Sky News anchor Kay Burley collapsed on air this week, just as she was finishing off a lunchtime bulletin. Her ill-health, it has turned out, is linked to her worries about Barry George, who was acquitted on appeal, in August, after spending several years in prison for the murder of television presenter Jill Dando.
